Blacktop

The territory

The AF1 was born on the outdoor court in 1982 and grew up on the street. Blacktop is a material study for that seam: not the polished leather of a dress execution, not technical nylon, but the AF1 as it is actually lived in. Court heritage, weathered by the sidewalk.

01The read

Consumer
The street consumer treats the AF1 as a canvas for their own history. They crease it, scrub it, wear it to death or keep it box-fresh. They want a shoe that looks like it earned its wear, not one that looks beat.
Archive — reference, do not repeat
Bruce Kilgore drew it as a basketball shoe: perforated toe, pivot-point outsole, the strap. Blacktop references the court, not the hardwood — the cracked asphalt of the outdoor park, where the shoe became cultural.
Season
Summer in the city. Heat off the pavement, sun that fades your whites. The palette leans warm-neutral and sun-bleached, not seasonal-bright.

02The material story

Asphalt tumbled leather
Full-grain, tumbled for a soft break and fine aggregate speckle. Warm charcoal, not flat black.
Quarter + toe
Court suede
Dusty matte nubuck on the mudguard. Reads worn-in on day one, then ages with grace.

50%+ recycled leather fiber, held as the crisp hit where the eye lands first.

Sun-bleached line
Faded off-white on the midsole stripe and lace tips — a court line left in the sun.
Accent

Finish direction: matte to low-satin across the whole upper. Gloss belongs to the refined executions; the street reads honest and un-shiny.

Cost lever
Concentrate the tumbled leather and embossed swoosh where the eye reads first — swoosh, toe, mudguard. Run a standard hide on the quarter panels to hold the tier.
Technical watch-out
Tumbled and oil-tanned leathers can carry enough oil content to fight the cement bond at the midsole. Spec controlled-oil hide and a primer step.
Sustainability
Flyleather on the swoosh plus a Nike Grind rubber outsole pushes recycled content toward the Move to Zero threshold without touching the hand-feel the consumer expects.
